How to Get 4K HDR Streaming on Older Smart TVs (Without Buying a New TV)
You bought a 55-inch 4K TV in 2017 or 2018. The screen is still beautiful โ 4K panel resolution, good color reproduction. But the built-in Smart TV operating system is now 7 years old, the apps crash, and the available media player apps don't support modern streaming credentials. The solution is not buying a new TV.
The solution is a $50โ$200 external streaming device that plugs into your TV's HDMI port, completely bypassing the aging smart system while using your TV's excellent panel hardware.
Step 1: Choose the Right External Device
Your older Smart TV almost certainly has an HDMI 2.0 port โ this supports 4K at 60fps and HDR10. Depending on whether your TV supports HDMI 2.0a or HDMI 2.1, you may also get Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Check your TV's manual or the manufacturer's website for HDMI spec details.
For a 4K TV with HDMI 2.0 (2015โ2019 models)
- Amazon Firestick 4K Max ($60): The easiest option. Plug in, set up in 5 minutes, install TiviMate from the Downloader app. Full 4K HDR10 and Dolby Vision support.
- BuzzTV XRS 4500 ($89): More RAM (4GB) than the Firestick, better for large channel lists and smooth EPG loading.
- Nvidia Shield TV ($149): The premium choice โ adds AI upscaling that makes even HD content look near-4K quality on your panel.
For an older 1080p TV with HDMI 1.4
If your TV panel maxes out at 1080p (Full HD), you won't display 4K regardless of your streaming device. However, a modern external device still dramatically improves the experience โ faster app loading, better codec support for HD streams, and access to modern media player apps that work with Floxv credentials.
- Firestick HD ($30): Perfect for 1080p TVs. Fast, cheap, and runs TiviMate flawlessly for HD streams.
Step 2: Configure HDMI Settings on Your TV
This step is critical and commonly skipped. Older Smart TVs default their HDMI ports to "Standard" mode, which limits HDMI bandwidth โ even if your TV supports 4K, this setting prevents it from rendering 4K signals from external devices.
Samsung TVs (2016โ2019): Go to Settings โ General โ External Device Manager โ HDMI UHD Color โ set the HDMI port your streaming device is connected to โ ON
LG TVs (2016โ2019): Go to Settings โ Picture โ HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color โ enable it for the HDMI input your device uses
Sony TVs (2016โ2019): Go to Settings โ External Inputs โ HDMI signal format โ set to "Enhanced format" for your streaming device's input
After enabling enhanced HDMI mode, you must also enable HDR in your TV settings (usually under Picture Mode โ HDR or Picture Options โ HDR).
Step 3: Configure Output Settings on Your Streaming Device
Your external streaming device also needs to be told to output 4K HDR:
Amazon Firestick 4K
Settings โ Display & Sounds โ Display โ Video Resolution โ set to 2160p. Then go to Match Original Frame Rate โ On (prevents judder on 24fps content). HDR โ On.
Android TV Box (BuzzTV, Nvidia Shield)
Settings โ Device Preferences โ Display โ Resolution โ 2160p (4K) 60Hz. HDR: enabled. Color space: Auto (let the TV negotiate the best option).
Step 4: Configure Your Media Player for 4K
Your media player app must also be configured to request the 4K stream rather than defaulting to HD:
- TiviMate: Settings โ Player โ Hardware acceleration โ On ยท Video decoder โ ExoPlayer ยท Default video resolution โ Ultra HD (if available)
- IPTV Smarters: Settings โ Player Settings โ ExoPlayer ยท Enable hardware decoding
- GSE Smart IPTV: Settings โ Player โ Native player (best on all hardware) ยท Enable hardware decode
Step 5: Verify Your Bandwidth
Genuine 4K HDR streams require 25โ35 Mbps of stable bandwidth. Run a speed test on your streaming device using the built-in speed test in your router app, or download a speed test app on the streaming device. If your speed falls below 20 Mbps consistently, consider using an Ethernet adapter for your streaming device rather than Wi-Fi.
๐บ Floxv's 4K streams are encoded at 25โ40 Mbps with HDR10 metadata. On any TV with a 4K panel and the right external streaming device, the picture quality is indistinguishable from a premium cable 4K feed. Check Floxv Pricing and Plans โ from $5/month on the annual plan.
